The Tomato’s Journey to Pizza

The tomato was a pivotal addition to pizza, transforming it into the dish we recognize today. Originally brought to Europe from the Americas in the 16th century, tomatoes were initially met with suspicion and thought to be poisonous. It wasn’t until the 18th century that Neapolitan pizza makers embraced the tomato, creating the classic combination of flavors that forms the foundation of modern pizza.

History

From the Community

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana’s Manchester location channels New Haven pizza traditions with coal-fired ovens, a paper-thin crust and toppings that reviewers say taste fresh and balanced.

Diners repeatedly note the signature charred edges and the peppered, bright-tasting tomato sauce as defining features of each pie.

Visitors describe the scene as part kitchen theater, part neighborhood pizzeria: one guest observed that being able to see the pizzaiolos at work was memorable, and another said simply, "Everything we ordered was worthy of our of taste buds," (Dalton Anderson).

A frequent theme in reviews is restraint — keep toppings light to let the crust and sauce shine — summed up by Ryan when he noted the pizza "was perfectly thin and crisp with the right amount of char."

Standout pies named by customers include the original tomato pie, the white clam, and the doppio pepperoni.

Many reviewers pair their slices with a Foxon Park soda; one reviewer mentioned that leftovers reheat well at 400F, making the pies both a fresh meal and a practical take-home option.

Overall, the Manchester outpost is praised for consistent execution, friendly service, and faithful New Haven flavors.

"We ordered a small half Original Tomato Pie/half Original Tomato with Mozzarella, a small half Doppio Pepperoni/half Pepperoni & Hot Cherry Tomatoes, and a liter of Foxon Park Soda Root Beer. Everything we ordered was worthy of our of taste buds. It's tough to rank, but the original tomato pie was ultimately my favorite. But the pepperoni with hot cherry tomatoes was addictive and the root beer with it was the perfect combo. That Foxon root beer is something else. Coming from the West Coast, my immediate reaction of walking into Frank Pepe's and seeing the pizzaiolos with their massive pizza peels was, "Whoa!" And the coal fired oven in action is unreal. I love being able to see what's going on in the kitchen, and the setup for this pizzeria is incredibly cool. Plus, the accessibility of the toilet (designed to support elderly and handicapped) and the homey feel of the changing table just made it feel like a restaurant that cares about its customers. I love it! Our waitress, Jodi, really brought the experience home. She was welcoming, provided excellent recommendations, and was simply a delightful person. The service from start to finish was superb. I loved Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana and will definitely dine here again."

"First time having frank pepes, heard so much good things about the pizza and it definitely lived up to our expectations, possibly exceeded them. Pickup time was extremely fast, wasn’t greasy like most chains and was perfectly thin and crisp with the right amount of char. Ingredients tasted fresh with the perfect ratio. My mother has a sensitive stomach and the sauce was perfect. I can see why this is the best pizza in the US"

"Stopped in around 9pm for a quick dinner on the ride home. Tried the sampler of 3 specialty pizzas and it didn't disappoint. The waitress even clued us into the rewards program and got an instant $10 off. Friendly staff and delicious food at a fair price, what more can you ask for? The leftovers even reheated well (400F for a few minutes)."

"Pizza was delicious it had a nice thin crust, the sauce was nice and flavorful and it did not have an excessive amount of char! We also purchase the cannoli pie and I highly recommended it was delicious! It is pricey but the size medium felt more like a large so for us it was worth it."
