Connecticut’s Apizza: A Unique Slice of History

Connecticut, particularly New Haven, is renowned for its unique style of pizza known as 'apizza,' which is pronounced 'ah-beets.' This variation features a thin, chewy crust with charred edges resulting from coal-fired ovens and uses minimal cheese, often just a sprinkle of grated pecorino Romano. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, opened in 1925, is credited with pioneering this style, and its white clam pizza has become an iconic dish that draws culinary pilgrims from around the world.

"You could easily drive right past Alforno and miss it. It's quietly tucked at the end of a strip mall. But you would be missing out on an excellent dining experience. The ambience is classy and romantic, the service friendly and professional, and the food is delicious. I tried the calamari, which was perfectly breaded and fried, crunchy and lightly seasoned. Then I had the walnut and blue cheese salad which has ample sized, fresh and delicious. But the icing on the cake was the dessert of pistachio semifreddo. It was drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt. I will definitely eat dinner here again the next time I'm in the area."
